Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best time to go?
There is no bad time to hunt. Early summer in South Africa (October, November) is very dry so low water sources and very little food sources. Thus, there is little vegetation for animals to hide. In late summer (February, March, April), there is no hunting pressure, and animals are going into the rut. South Africa’s autumn and winter (May through September) tends to be the busiest hunting season of South Africa.

Which airline do I use?
Delta Airlines and South Africa Airways have direct flights to South Africa out of Atlanta, Washington, and New York. KLM, Air France, and United Airlines have flights over Europe. We recommend a direct flight. Also, flights through Europe are not advisable if you will be traveling with your own rifles. Also South African Airways has changed their rules/regulations for transportation of firearms and ammunition. See their website for details.

What are the passport requirements and entry requirements for South Africa?
There are no special passport or entry requirements for U.S. citizens entering South Africa. Do check your airline for any airline requirements.

Are there any health requirements and/or health recommendations? The Wild Wildebeest Lodge is not situated in a malaria area. You may consult your physician or visit the CDC’s website for health information ~ http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/south-africa.htm. We suggest Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Tetanus shots for international travel. We also recommend bringing insect/tick repellent for use when you are in the bushveld.

What currency is used in South Africa?
South African Rand ~ U.S. dollars can be exchanged for rand at the airport.

How do I get from the airport to the lodge?
Your Professional Hunter will meet you at the airport upon your arrival and will drive you to the lodge. It is a 3 to 4 hour road trip depending upon traffic.

What type of rifle/caliber should I bring?
Minimum requirement for plains game is 270 and higher. We recommend a 30 caliber. Minimum requirement for dangerous game is 375 and higher.

What type of ammunition should I bring?
We recommend Barnes X Triple Shock Tipped for medium calibers. For all other calibers, we recommend Barnes X Triple Shock OR Swift A-frame (Scirocco).

Can I rent a rifle rather than bring my own?
Yes, we have rifles available to rent including Remington and Winchester models - most of which are in the 300 series. If renting a rifle, you will go to the shooting range before you start hunting.

What recommendations do you have for bow hunting?
Preferred poundage is 70, and the minimum is 50 pounds. We recommend cut-on-impact fixed blade broadheads. For example, G5 Montec, Steelhead, Muzzy, and Slicktrick. For both plains and dangerous game, we recommend that you bring extra string and cable, string serving, and string wax. The bow hunter may want to practice drawing his/her bow from a sitting, kneeling, and standing position. These methods are applicable for walk-and-stalk and blind hunting. Minimum grainage for arrows is 450 grain with broadhead. Bow hunting will be a maximum of 30 yard shots. Your own range finder is a requirement as well as a minimum of 12 hunting shafts. For dangerous game (Big 7) and thick-skinned animals (giraffe, eland, hippo), recommended is a minimum poundage of 80 with arrow and must generate 90 foot pounds of energy, cut-on-impact blade broadheads such as Grizzly sticks, German kinetics, and Swiggy, with a heavy front weighted arrow from 700 to 1000 grain.

Is there cellular and internet service at the lodge?
While wifi is available, connection is limited and oftentimes unreliable and inconsistent. Cell service, however, is
generally not a problem. You may want to consider calling your phone carrier to activate an international plan for
the time you will be in South Africa.

Do I need an electric converter for my U.S. devices?
South Africa’s power supply is 220V of electricity while the U.S. power supply is 110V. Therefore, U.S. devices such as hair dryers and curling irons will not work in South Africa. All rooms, however, are equipped with a hair dryer. Electric converters are available to charge your cellular phones and notepads.

What is the weather and climate like in the Limpopo Province of South Africa?
Summer -- October to February: average 90° F
Fall -- March and April: average 80° F
Winter -- May to August: average 40° F to 70° F
Spring -- September: average 60° to 80° F

What other general advice would you give?
Practice shooting off shooting sticks as well as free-hand. Shots range from 20 to 200 yards.
